Q&A with Little Danube, the sustainable and natural soap brand.

We had the pleasure to chat to Little Danube, an all-natural and sustainable soap brand launched in August 2020. Katrina Borissova the founder of Little Danube was keen to create a plastic-free and natural brand, providing transparency for her customers. Her soap designs are fun and creative as well as practical; the soap moulds are perfect for massaging into your hands. In addition, the fruity scents sound incredible, ranging from grapefruit to bergamot. All in all, this is the soap you need to get behind!

Could you tell us the background story of Little Danube? Is there a meaning behind the brand name?

Little Danube is named after the longest river in Europe, the Danube runs through 10 countries. Katrina chose this name to crystallise her journey from the east to the west, a nostalgic story telling where each soap is named after a city crossed by the Danube. 


How do you embody sustainability within your products and overall brand?

SUSTAINABILITY is at the forefront of our design. We use eco-friendly tissue made from acid free paper and soy-based ink. Our soap boxes are recyclable, and our delivery bags are fully compostable.

One of our latest projects is with Treeapp we’ve committed to plant a tree each time you spend £10 or more on their website.

As statistics currently stand, eight million tonnes of plastic is predicted to be making its way into our oceans each year. Our mission is to redefine the beauty standards and industry by providing plastic free products and delivered to your door in compostable and biodegradable mailer and packaging.

You work with Treeapp - how does it work and in what ways have you integrated it into Little Danube?

We’ve partnered with Treeapp in November 2020 where we’ve committed to plant a tree each time you spend £10 or more on their website. Working with local communities to create fair paid jobs, Treeapp works with tree planting NGO's to ensure that trees are planted where needed across the world.  Treeapp’s goal is to improve the world we live in by enabling people to plant one tree for free everyday with minimal effort, and by helping organisations spread the word about their sustainable products and services.

Your designs are really fun and unique - is there an inspiration behind them?

Our tagline is “cherishing beauty through the senses” with the desire to remove the autopilot mode when washing your hands, the cubic forms provide an unique self-care experience. In search of lost time, found again with the senses of the beauty products…these allegoric scents transcend us towards a past that is soft and distant.

What is your favourite scent within the range of soaps you offer?

Grapefruit. It is a citrus scent with a particularly bitter herbaceous woody aspect, reminiscent of vetiver and it also reminds me of my student years where I would eat grapefruit for breakfast pretty much every day.  


Are there any exciting upcoming plans for Little Danube?

We are currently reformulating, embedding learnings and feedback from customers and launching new products and revised formulas. New scents, new colours and some repurposed ingredients…. As food byproducts are being increasingly upcycled as raw materials by the cosmetics industry, there is so much potential for exploration and value added to our customers as well as a circular economy. 

Your website also has a blog - is this something you would like to expand in the future?

Absolutely, we’ve just started and it’s something we’ll keep expanding on different topics. Blogs are a very good emphasis of our brand values with content that provides educational value and continuity of the customer experience and journey. Blogging helps to foster the pre or post-sale relationship with the customers by building questions that are commonly asked and hold brands accountable for their knowledge and expertise to be more accessible and shareable.
