Travel Trends for 2021

‘Did someone say ‘travel’? At the moment I can’t even go to the end of our road’.

With the current travel restrictions, it’s hard to predict what the situation will be like in a few months. That doesn’t mean to say that we can’t start planning for a well-earned holiday in 2021.

In fact, now’s the ideal time to begin looking at how we can still enjoy a perfect break this year, and yes… we deserve it.

Exotic Destinations

A random trawl through the internet this morning for trends in 2021 brought up exotic destinations like Mauritius, Mexico, and Miami.  There were even suggestions about renting a private island like Kim Kardashian, for only £298,000 a night!

Bucket list destination holidays to far flung places like Japan and South Korea, are also highlighted as popular choices for 2021. The theory is that people have been stuck inside for so long and are now thinking ‘here’s my chance to do all those things I always said I would’ and ‘let’s just do it’

If you’ve got the money then yes, great. There are some amazing holidays out there!  Many holiday companies are upping their game this year by offering additional excursions and hard to beat experiences, enticing you to book with them.

Financially though, this has been a tough year, and we can’t all afford to jet off to the other side of the world.

But that doesn’t mean that you have to rule out a break completely. Once the travel restrictions ease up, it may be just what you need!

Why ‘staycations’ are trending this year.

If you’re looking for holidays away from busy, densely populated resorts and don’t fancy standing in long post-Brexit passport queues, there are plenty of solutions that won’t break the bank.

How about:

  • A road trip - explore the stunning coastline of the UK, either by car or rented camper van. Travel in your own self-contained space, at your own pace, and go wherever you fancy.

  • Hikingtaking timeout to discover the freedom of the highest peaks in Britain, or the rolling countryside of Yorkshire, the Lakes, or the South Coast. Decide if you want to solo travel, go with friends or join a small group.

  • Island HoppingImmerse yourself in the natural world of the Scottish Islands, far from the craziness of everyday life. On a good day, the glorious white sandy beaches and turquoise waters could be in the Caribbean.

  • An activity holidayalways wanted to try sea-kayaking, dinghy sailing, yoga, horse riding? Why not make it this year? Even if it’s only for a day, just do it!

Let’s talk about practicalities

While stuck at home you’ve got time to plan your perfect getaway, so get organised and make holiday 2021 the best you’ve ever had.

Find a holiday that allows you to cancel or postpone your plans up to a few days beforehand in case government advice on travel changes.

Check the government website (here) in the UK and in your country of destination for the latest COVID updates.

Look for insurance that will cover you in case of COVID-based restrictions on travel or cancellation.

If you still plan to go abroad make sure your passport and EHIC card is still valid.  A new GHIC (Global Health Insurance card) will soon be available (here) but remember it is always better to take out separate travel insurance as well.

A positive plan

The freedom to travel might seem like a far-off dream at the moment. Planning a trip can be part of the fun though, even if it’s not quite what you’d do in an ideal world.

We’re all having to adapt this year and who knows…. this could be the chance to discover new places and new experiences right on your own doorstep.

See you there!
