Wild swimming in a wild world

I love adventure.

Exploring new countries, taking in new landscapes, the sights, the smells and the food! But since the world went into lockdown, during the early days, I struggled to see how I could find a new sense of adventure whilst the travel ban is in place.

Luckily, we are coming into British summer time which means long days, warm sun and activities which would have been ludicrous at the beginning of the pandemic are now warming up. I first thought of the idea when the UK government announced that wild or open water swimming would be allowed with the easing of restrictions (wild swimming was one of the activities mentioned). Now let me be clear, I’m not condoning that you go to tourist hot spots and you absolutely should keep social distancing and general safety measures in place… on a positive note, it does provide a great sense of freedom and a great form of exercise.

To provide a bit of context; in my normal life aside from the creative industry, I am a swimming teacher. So a strong ability in the water and common sense is a must if you are going to try this activity. Different swim spots have different dangers: the water temperature, currents, depth are all things to consider as well as the correct safety equipment, and if you are allowed to swim there. However it can be fun.

The last week I have visited my local lake four times and even managed to fit in one weekend trip to a river. My local lake has lots of different islands that you can swim out to, and take a look round the vast body of water and breathe in the serenity. If you have a boat or paddle board, it’s a good chance to do these water activities too. Floating in the water, swimming around finding new areas to perch provides a much needed exercise routine after weeks of sitting on the sofa.

If you need a different routine, find a hidden lake. Just consider the adventure to be had.
